I'm starting to frame some of my work where previously I've never bothered (or it's not been in an appropriate format for framing).
Where do the people that regularly frame prints, photos etc get their frames? I had some spare ones from Ikea, the Ribba pine effect 15" squares (12" viewing window through the cut board, 15" exterior), but I've found that they're not as solid as I'd like, and one of the ones I've been hanging for a while has started to warp at the edges. Any good recommended local suppliers out there that don't cost the earth? Seems a shame to create something I'm proud of and then compromise it with a sub-standard frame.
I wanted something really special and I went to Bizzarre in Ruthin - www.bizarrefurniture.co.uk. He stretched a canvas for me that had been one of my 'weathered rust works', and then after discussing exactly what I required he made me a solid (ash) frame. This is work is now in the North Wales Open in Mold and I have entered it for sale but its one of those funny things..... desperatly want it to sell, but won't be disappointed if I have to bring it home!! He does 'ordinary' frames too and have enclosed the web site for you to see his site.
Dare I say on line, I have actually used Hobbycraft recently, wanted a basic plain wooden frame, for a standard A4 mono print. I was able to buy the mount cut to size and the frame, glass, backing board (easy to put together) so cheaply and it did the job I wanted it to.
There is a framer in Wellington Road, Rhyl which I have used in the past, sorry can't think of their name at moment.
I think my suggestions are probably too far out for you but thought you should know about Bizarre if you are looking for something really special....
I have used a v. good, meticulous and v. reasonable framer for about 7 years now. His name is Nigel Evans, and trades under the name Linea Framing, based in Dwygyfylchi. He's a been fantastic, and does framing for a lot of good local artists. Always busy. He is happy if you want him to make the frames and then do the rest yourself, or he will do the whole thing (handy if you've got specialised stuff). He's also given me lots of "hints & tips", which have helped me do more myself and cut the cost down. I have several times asked him to make me sets of frames for prints and photographs. The last 30cm plain narrow wood frames, glazed, with mounts etc. were about £10 each. Materials all v. good quality. Telephone no. 01492 622833. See what you think.
