Applications open 1st May 2014!

Helfa Gelf / Art Trail 14 is our 9th annual Open Studios event for artists and makers in North Wales. It is held on weekends throughout the month of September, allowing the public the special opportunity to peek ‘behind the scenes’ right into the heart of creativity – your studio.

Helfa Gelf / Art Trail aims to promote you as an artist by showing and selling your work directly to the public. Helfa Gelf / Art Trail also gives you a fantastic chance to meet fellow artists as well as curators, arts officers and others who could help your career.

Who can apply?

Visual artists and makers of all genres, forms and media with studio spaces in Gwynedd, Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire and Wrexham Counties. For a current listing see our artists page.

It is essential that you have a space that you’re happy to open to the public for the duration of Helfa Gelf / Art Trail, whether it is a professional studio, gallery, your spare bedroom or garden shed. You can even find yourself a temporary workspace for the duration of the event.

What can you expect from us?

  • bilingual professionally-produced marketing and publicity, of both the event and your work and studio, including:
  • printed publications
  • this website, helfagelf.co.uk, which includes your own updateable page with text and photos of your work, and link to your own website
  • event media coverage
  • private views and events
  • support and promotion of your practice
  • the chance to enter and be selected for several independently curated exhibitions and residencies. Curators will use the images you supply on your webpages as first port of call for selection.

What do we expect from you?

The Helfa Gelf / Art Trail members who have experienced the most visitors and sales during Helfa Gelf / Art Trail agree that the more commitment, enthusiasm and effort you put into it, the more you will get out of it!

All applicants must agree to:

  • adhere strictly to the opening times (11.00am-5.00pm) and be open for visitors on the days that they have advertised as being open
  • have a space set up for people to visit, and be actively working (as much as feasible) during this time
  • display your risk assessment
  • display provided banners/flags as way-finders for visitors
  • provide necessary information and print-quality images for our information and marketing purposes.
  • read the terms and conditions for application

We also strongly advise:

  • you market your studio
  • you do your best to ensure that your visitors have a fantastic experience. Suggestions include hosting workshops, demonstrations, and/or inviting local school groups
  • you collaborate with other artists in your local area to further raise the event (and your) profile. We organize our artists into local clusters to make this easier. All you need to do is attend your cluster meetings.

The details:

When?
The event will take place from Fridays to Sundays throughout September.
Please ensure you tick the box behind every date you would like to do on the application form. You can open for as many or as few days as you like.

How much?
The Membership fee is calculated by how much space you buy in our brochure:

A) Standard membership : £55
This buys you 1 slot in the brochure that will include the following information:

  • 1 image
  • Name of individual or group or studio
  • Contact telephone number, e-mail address and address of studio (please note: GROUP studios applying for standard membership: We will correspond with all members of the group. However only 1 contact phone number and e-mail address will appear in print.)
  • Bilingual Directions to studio (100 characters long)
  • 1 Bilingual artist/group statement (80 characters long)

B) Premium membership: £100
This buys you 2 slots in the brochure that will include the following information:

  • 2 images
  • Name of individual or group or studio
  • Contact telephone number, e-mail address and address of studio (please note: GROUP studios applying for premium membership: We will correspond with all members of the group. However only 1 contact phone number and e-mail address will appear in print.)
  • Bilingual Directions to studio (100 characters long)
  • Bilingual artist/group statement (350 characters long)

As the character count is much higher for premium membership there is adequate space to list, for example, names of group members and their individual art disciplines / artist statements. It is up to the applicant how the form is filled in. So for example a group with 6 members has enough space to list names and art disciplines and chooses two images that best represent their space. A group with two members gets an image each and has enough space for names, disciplines and individual artist statements. An individual applying for premium membership could include an image of their work and an image of their studio, a detailed artist statement and studio description or use the space for promotion of relevant workshops, exhibitions and special events.
